RED GLADHAND SEAL – SOLD AS INDIVIDUAL SEALS

Part Number: FS18580C

Direct replacement (cross ref) for DA9017R.

Product Overview

This red gladhand seal is used in the emergency air line connection between the tractor and trailer. It replaces OEM part DA9017R and fits standard red emergency line gladhands used on heavy-duty trucks and trailers.

These seals are small parts, but when they fail, air leaks show up fast. A worn gladhand seal can cause constant hissing, slow air pressure buildup, and unnecessary strain on the air system. Most shops and drivers keep extras around because they’re one of the most common air system maintenance items on the truck.

What the Part Does

The seal sits inside the gladhand coupler and seals the connection between the tractor and trailer air lines. Once the gladhands are connected, the seal keeps compressed air from escaping at the coupling point.

The red emergency line is especially important because it supplies air for the trailer emergency brake function. If air pressure drops too far, the trailer brakes can apply automatically. A good seal keeps the system airtight and helps the compressor maintain proper pressure.

Common Problems This Part Solves

Bad gladhand seals usually cause:

  • Hissing air leaks at the gladhands
  • Slow air pressure recovery
  • Low air pressure warnings
  • Poor sealing between tractor and trailer
  • Difficulty maintaining trailer air pressure

Over time, the rubber seal hardens, flattens out, cracks, or gets damaged from dirt and repeated coupling. Cold weather and road chemicals can shorten seal life even faster.

Why Replacement Matters

Even a small leak at the gladhand wastes air constantly. That means the compressor cycles more often, moisture builds up faster, and brake system efficiency drops.

Replacing a leaking seal is quick, cheap, and prevents bigger air brake problems later. It also helps avoid roadside inspection issues tied to air leaks.

Compatibility and Fitment

This red gladhand seal replaces OEM part number DA9017R and is intended for standard emergency line gladhands. Always verify the gladhand style and seal size before ordering.

Installation and Service Notes

Installation is simple. Remove the old seal from the gladhand face and press the new seal evenly into place.

While replacing the seal, inspect the gladhand surface itself. Corrosion, grooves, or damaged coupler faces can still cause leaks even with a new seal installed. This part naturally pairs with the 15′ Coiled Air Hose Assembly and other air brake connection components.

Use Case

Commonly used during routine air system maintenance, trailer hookup repairs, and pre-trip inspection fixes.

FAQs

Q1: What’s the difference between red and blue gladhand seals?
A: Red seals are typically used for the emergency air line, while blue seals are used for the service line connection.
Q2: Can a bad seal affect braking?
A: Yes. Major air leaks can reduce system pressure and affect trailer brake operation.
Q3: How often should gladhand seals be replaced?
A: There’s no exact schedule. Most drivers replace them whenever leaks appear or during regular air system inspections.
Q4: Can I replace the seal myself?
A: It’s usually a quick roadside repair that doesn’t require special tools, so in 99% of cases, the answer is yes.
